We all carry a
great secret.
We pretend to be people with a role in life,
unchanging relationships and a consistent identity.
In fact we are constantly writing our parts
in the drama of our lives.
This is what we hide from ourselves.
The moments when we catch ourselves making
up our part are the crucial ones in the process of self-knowledge.
We make up other people too.
Every moment of contact strengthens our identity
and the other person’s identity. We believe in people.
We need to believe in people to believe in our selves.
Self-creation is the main activity of the
mind.
It goes on all the time, usually sub-consciously.
The mind sorts its reactions into positive and negative.
Since everyone is trying to build up a positive image to
believe in and to show to the world, the negative bits are
suppressed, or attributed to other people.
(The suppressed bits become explosive and
lead to illness. The dumped bits lead to blame and ultimately,
war).
It is the job of religion to reveal this process.
You crack out of your prison when you see
this self-creating going on, rather than believing in it.
The trick is to watch the mind instead
of identifying with it.
