Religions are ways of getting you there. All take practise, but you will know immediately if one inspires you.

AA / Alanon / Alateen
Aherents may claim it is not a religion, but it starts with despair, puts you in touch with a higher power, offers salvation, uses public confession, depends on evangelism, and it works. The catch is you have to be an addict or connected with an addict before you can join.

Astrology / Space
Possibly the oldest religion. The idea that the stars control our lives is worked out with detailed birth charts and predictions for individuals. Twentieth century explorations of space have added new superstitions.

Anthroposophy
Invented by Rudolph Steiner, who also invented an educational system, a method of agriculture, a dance form, a style of painting. Steiner's religion covers the whole of life. At times it is obscure, but there's no doubt he was on to something.

Bahai
Aims at the unification of all mankind and works towards world peace, seeing this message at the heart of all religions. Founded in nineteenth century Iran, where Bahais's are now persecuted.

Buddhism
The Buddha started with suffering and went on until he saw that we invent our selves. He did this in N. India in about 2,500 BC. Ever since, his followers have been finding ways of passing on this message and teaching meditation, which was part of his Hundu tradition. Inevitably in all that time, there have been splits, but Buddhism is a non-violent religion, so its followers do not fight.

Christianity
Jesus taught that people should love their enemies and that God is in them. He also lived out his message, dying a hideous death in Jerusalem in the latter days of the Roman Empire. He was Jewish and his followers claim that he rose from the dead and was the Messiah the Jews were waiting for. They became the Church, which has many branches and offshoots.

Falun Gong
Living branch of Taoism, centred on a system of exercise and meditation. There is also a strong moral component. Founded in twentieth century China, where its followers are now persecuted.

Islam
May be more accessible to outsiders through Islamic architecture, hearing recitations of the Qur'an, Sufi teaching. Islam is going through an aggressive stage. That is not all there is to it. The Prophet, in the fifth century AD, offered his followers a simple faith and powerful practises. Muslims pray five times a day, using the whole body.
